On July 16, 2015, a Nexan pipeline located near the town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, dumped approximately 5 million gallons of a mixture of bitumen, sand and water. The cause of the failure has not yet been revealed. Usually, leaks are detected immediately but for some reason, the system did not work. The spill was reported by a person who was passing through the area.
Bitumen generally contains hydrocarbons, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur, among others.
