The San Pablito market is popular for pyrotechnic sales (classified as dangerous goods) and commonly welcomes thousands of visitors as the holiday season approaches. Witnesses reported that the ground trembled during the series of blasts, followed by a fire that ravaged the entire market.
The market was successively destroyed in 2005 and 2006 by fires without causing casualties.
The cause of this accident is not yet known. 31 were killed and over 70 injuried as reported by the Mexican authorities.
