A thief is in for quite a surprise when he discovers that the car he stole from a gym parking lot contains a nuclear gauge with radioactive material, and finds himself actively sought by police in North Vancouver.
The Mazda 6 in question was stolen at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, from the parking lot of a fitness center in the British Columbia municipality, the North Vancouver section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a release.
“A nuclear soil moisture density gauge was stolen with the vehicle and could pose a health risk to the person who took it,” police stressed.
This type of equipment is used to measure parameters such as thickness, density and humidity in materials, and contains radioactive materials. This gauge can be used in construction and other industrial sectors.
The device found in the stolen car is a Troxler 3430 with a small amount of radioactive material that can still expose a person to radiation if handled.
“A person can begin to feel the effects of radiation after 24 hours of exposure to a gauge that is not stored properly,” explained the RCMP.
However, the gauge does not produce enough radiation to pose a risk to the general public.
